Are Midwife Services Covered by Insurance in Nevada?

When considering a home birth or midwife-assisted birth, many expectant parents wonder about the practical aspects, particularly insurance coverage. "Are midwife services covered by insurance in Nevada?" is a common and crucial question. Understanding how insurance interacts with midwifery care can significantly impact your birthing choices and financial planning. At Northern Nevada Midwives Association (NNMA), we aim to provide clarity on this topic, helping you navigate your options with confidence and ease. This article will explore the ins and outs of insurance coverage for midwife services in Nevada, ensuring you are well-informed and prepared for your journey towards a personalized and empowering birth experience.

Typically home birth midwives are covered as out-of-network providers in Nevada.  Because of the limited options for birth, you may be able to get an exemption for coverage at an in-network rate.   This would require a pre-authorization at the beginning of care.  You may work directly with your insurance provider to achieve this or you may use our biller for a small fee to assist you with this process.

Nevada Medicaid

Due to the fact that Nevada has no regulation for homebirth midwives, Nevada Medicaid does not cover homebirth midwives at this time.

Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) and Flexible Spending Accounts (FSAs)

If your insurance plan has limited coverage for midwife services, you might consider using a Health Savings Account (HSA) or a Flexible Spending Account (FSA). These accounts allow you to use pre-tax dollars for medical expenses, which can include midwifery care. This can be a valuable way to manage costs associated with home births and midwife services.

Steps to Ensure Coverage

Verify Provider Credentials: Ensure that your midwife is a licensed healthcare provider recognized by your insurance company. At NNMA, our midwives are fully certified and meet all professional standards required by insurers.

Contact Your Insurance Provider: Speak directly with your insurance company to understand what services are covered, any pre-authorization requirements, and if there are any specific conditions you need to meet. Additionally, we work with a third party biller that can assist you with this for a small fee if you feel that it would be beneficial to utilize someone that understands how to navigate the insurance system.

Get a Detailed Breakdown: Request a detailed breakdown of covered services, potential out-of-pocket costs, and any necessary paperwork. Knowing these details can help you avoid unexpected expenses. The NNMA will provide you with a global bill at the end of care that you can submit for reimbursement.

Explore Additional Options: If your insurance coverage is insufficient, consider using HSAs or FSAs to cover the costs of midwifery services.
